JONATHAN GELATT:

I've been shopping at Strictly Discs for about three years now. I orginally went there because they had a good selection of hip-hop on vinyl, but now I mainly go for their superb selection of original and reissue funk and groove vinyl. I also like to check out their selection of funk & groove compilations on CD. Plus, the "buy 12 get 1" deal is pretty friggin' sweet.

10...err...11 QUESTIONS FROM STRICTLY DISCS:

1. How long & why have you been shopping at Strictly Discs?

I've been shopping at Strictly Discs for about three years now. I orginally went there because they had a good selection of hip-hop on vinyl, but now I mainly go for their superb selection of original and reissue funk and groove vinyl. I also like to check out their selection of funk & groove compilations on CD. Plus, the "buy 12 get 1" deal is pretty friggin' sweet.

2. Favorite release of 2007?

It's a toss up between M.I.A's "Kala" and Panda Bear's "Person Pitch"

Mia
Kala
Panda Bear
Person Pitch

3. First piece of recorded music you purchased and in what format:

Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" and ZZTop's "Eliminator", both on cassette tape. Being a kid ruled.

Jackson,Michael
Dangerous
ZZ Top
Eliminator

4. Music guilty pleasure:

The Monkees. I also own the whole first season of their TV show on DVD. How is that for guilty?

5. Favorite all-time concert/show:

I don't even have to think about this one. Prince, 7-7-07 in Minneapolis.

6. Favorite all-time album cover:

Again, I'm going to have to go with a few. If I would have to go with my top three right now, it would be Herb Albert and the Tijauna Bass's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights", The Brothers Johnson's "Look out for #1", but one of my all time favorites will always be The Who's "The Who Sell Out."

7. If I'm tippin’ one back, I'm probably at ________ having a ________.

If I'm tippin' one back, I'm probably at Azzalino's, having an Amelia Earhart (According to Azzalino's - "After one of these, Amelia lost her way and so will you: Rum, Gin, Vodka, Tequilla, Triple Sec, orange juice, pineapple juice adn a touch of grenadine."

8. Consumer item I cannot live without:

Um...I would have to go with Adidas Sneakers. The only brand name I really show loyalty to. Adidas can thank Run-DMC for that.

9. Percentage of time listening to music via the following medium:

CD PLAYER: 50%
iPod: Mine's broken. Damn you Apple.
TURNTABLE: 50%, but I'm working on improving that.

10. Favorite music website:

11. Song you never need to hear again:

"Rehab" by Amy Winehouse. Give me Spanky Wilson, Nicole Willis or the untouchable Sharon Jones over Winehouse any and every day of the week. Please.

JONATHAN'S JUKEBOX RATIONALE

Explanation of why I picked the songs I did: It is my "if I were to have 10 songs to dj at a dance party, these would be the 10." Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing is by far my favorite track off of "In The Jungle Groove" and the breakdown in the middle (which was improvised) is amazing. "The MG Beat" come from my first funk compilation ever, and still one of the best compilations I've heard, which was "Kings Of Funk" compiled by RZA and Keb Darge. "Shame, Shame, Shame" comes from another first of mine, my first compilation by the amazing Numero Group; it is also my favorite of their releases. Mandrill's "Echoes in my Mind" reminds me of The Warriors, which is one of the greatest movies of all time. This is a list of my dream funk/groove songs, some songs that I've listened to more times than I can count in my life, and songs that I will listen to until the day I die.
